Amazing Mangroves
Mangroves are special trees that grow near the sea, where the water is salty and the ground is muddy.
Their roots are very clever. Some roots stick out of the mud like little snorkels. These roots help the tree breathe, because the mud does not have much air.
Mangroves can also live in salty water. Some mangroves stop too much salt from entering through their roots. Others push extra salt out through their leaves.
Mangrove seeds are special too. They start growing while they are still on the parent tree. When they are ready, they fall into the water, float away, and grow in a new muddy place.
Mangroves protect the coast. Their strong, tangled roots slow down big waves, high tides, and storms. This helps stop the land from being washed away.
Many baby fish, crabs, and sea animals live safely among mangrove roots. The roots act like a nursery where young sea animals can hide and grow.
Mangroves also help fight climate change. They store a lot of carbon in their roots and muddy soil, helping to keep the Earth healthier.
